Every Haven caravan park, part of Bourne Leisure, has cultural champions, called Pioneers, who are volunteers with a passion for the business. They undertake the induction training for new members of staff at the start of the season, which is based around the cultural values of the company, and then act as, what manager Antony Smith describes as, ‘the eyes, ears and voice of the culture throughout the year’.

Organizational culture

To what extent does the culture of an organization influence the PsyCs embraced by its leaders and employees? Research undertaken by Richard et al (2009) sought to determine what relationship, if any, there was between organizational culture, PsyCs and organizational commitment – hypothesizing that PsyCs mediate the relationship between the other two factors. In doing so, they defined organizational culture as: ‘the pattern of shared values and beliefs that help individuals understand organizational functioning and thus provides them with norms for behaviour in the firm’. In particular, they focused on hierarchical and clan cultures. The former are held together by formal rules, policies and structures, with interactions subject to careful scrutiny, evaluation and control. They are also found not to be very adaptive and are generally resistant to change. Conversely, clan cultures emphasize togetherness, participation and teamwork – encouraging effective horizontal and vertical communications and positive human relations. There is less emphasis on formal structures and controlled decision-making, and more on tradition and loyalty. The researchers make the point that, whilst both culture models appear to be diametrically opposed, organizations can contain characteristics of both.
